My time as volunteer in the AKC

Hi, my name is Kolja. I am 19 yeas old and I just finished my high school examn in 2015. This year, in the beginning of 2016, with the support of helpucation e.V. I had the great opportunity to travel to Cambodia and visit the AKC as a volunteer. Here is what I experienced.

kolja_post_05

Unfortunately a homestay in Samrong as a foreigner is not allowed yet so I lived in Siem Reap, one of the biggest cities in the the country, which is well known for its vibrant traveler scene. The Angkor Kids Center is located 45 minutes drive from Siem Reap but fortunately Samnang organised a friendly Tuk Tuk driver, Proy, who drove me to the AKC. I enjoyed it every time, because for me it was interesting to observe the local people and to enjoy the landscape by driving past. Nevertheless this distance is an effort and complicates volunteering.

The lessons in the AKC take place in the evening, so every day I arrived at AKC around 5 pm. At this time, many children play marbles at the playground or on the area around the AKC. The lessons usually start a bit later when the teachers arrive at 5:30 pm. On my first day there the children didn’t notice me, they were so much preoccupied by their games. It was a pleasant atmosphere. After the arrival of the young teachers, I had a friendly conversation with them about my journey and me in person but also about their lives. Most of the teachers are still students in other schools. They teach after that in their free time as volunteers.

The classes with the younger kids were very loud. Almost 40 children and one young teacher who gave his best to teach them in English. It was all about the pronunciation: The teacher spoke out a word loudly and the class repeated it screaming. You can imagine that the lessons were quite vivid. Unlike the lessons for the older ones. Especially Phlom did very serious and good teaching. It was a pleasure to talk to his class on a high level. I told them things about Germany and my live and they gave me an insight into their lives. It was a very open and kind atmosphere.

I stayed for two weeks in Siem Reap, worked together with Samnang, with the teachers and the children and joined the “fence-project“. It was a great time and I was sad to leave this place. But I carry all the nice experiences with me. Until today it makes me happy when I think about that I’ve been at the AKC.

Lost & Found Electricity for AKC school

As you know 70 percent of AKC evening English classes need electricity to supply the light tube in each class. From the start of the school, batteries were used and later on with the support from one of our partners, Link For Aid in Italy, a few panels of Solar were donated and installed to supplied the entire school, followed by the installation of the fans donation from Salet’s friends.

It is not strange that things not living eternally so as our AKC Solar Panels, especially when it is done by non-expert compiling installation, it was not our mistake but the different in budget is huge. From times to time we had to fix it and replace a several spare parts, and unit this late months, this year 2016, we learned that they are already out of date, even it is 40 degree Celsius of the sun heat, the energy could only supply for 30 minutes and that what was the half of the first class hours. Then some of our classes forced to pause a little bit.

As long as we have the commitment, there will be a solution to get out of those challenges, thanks to our core partner Helpucation e.V.  for making the temporary solution for our classroom light, furthermore a big fan has been also equipped to each room to lower the heat a bit. Thanks to all our local team especially Hak for helping to install and committed to invest the maximum from these stuff.

Hope you enjoy it and be part of our group.

AKC takes pride celebrating Its International Women’s Day

Samnang train the team on teaching skills

Samnang is training the team on teaching skills

While the world is busy celebrating the international women’s day, 8th March 2016, AKC family too, celebrating our own day through a story of success we have made to our girls at Angkor Kids Center.

Getting back to the beginning history of AKC, we got two time survival by girls, Mrs. Salet NHY, who got the center back from closing after Mr. Samnang Chhon left the village in 2006 for his career development in the city center. And in 2008, Ms. Salet NHY who is our current active volunteer School Director, took over the class, and develop the school moved from one class to several classes, and from a shelter to a proper school.

Without these two important girls there is no Angkor Kids Center, there might be just an English class only.

On the overall, up to now we have more than TEN girls already participating in our programs from all levels, and three of them are freshly recruited to join the team through a strict process (Exam, Testing, and Oral Interview….), girls are doing a better job. This story is not covering the job we have to our students and the communities, which girls are fairly considered to be benefited from the programs.

Without education, and the access to education resources, we really could not find that there is other way to leverage the Gender Parity, especially Women to Men which is the hot topic that the world is talking on the International Women’s Day.

Congratulation girls, you are living in your wonderful world now, we are as general men are with you to make your world even better, fairer!

Get connected to our girls, get in touch with Angkor Kids Center !

Kea Mosley visit Angkor Kids Center for her “Give Back Mission”

It was so privileged to be given this opportunity by Mr. Chhung Sopheap and his wife Mrs. Aing Solin introducing our community project to a great lady Ms. Kea Mosley, a Cambodian-American lady.

Kea started her life in a difficult situation in rural Cambodia, at one point she had her life grew in an orphanage center and was given the greatest chance to move and live in the United State of America.

Speaking not very clear Khmer, the Cambodian language, Kea told us during her time at Angkor Kids Center that she loves her country, she loves her people, to the better life that she has now, she wants to share and give back to those who are in real need in a sustainable way.

Kea spent her time at many places in searching for the real one in her mind, all are too big and so so much work to do to help, she almost gave up or take a big plan, but thanks to Sopheap and  Solin for introducing a tiny project of Angkor Kids Center, where she got the most inspired, she realize that there is a way to start from a small angle but impacting in a greater size.

Kea has spread the words and she could enjoy some peaceful time enjoying her beautiful country  in the rest of her time here!

She is back to her developed home now and already tackling to find ways to support Angkor Kids Center.

We are proud of you Kea, and good luck with your “Give Back Mission”!

Better Media Campaign by Helpucation e.V. team

“We really see how great the projects, the school and the community of Somroang are, but it sometimes hard to speak them all”, Andreas Dorner who has spent several weeks at Angkor Kids Center recently said. In order to transfer the information, the impression and the experience better to the world, he and his wife as Helpucation e.V. missioners and the AKC team spent all and several days building the raw materials for the promotion publishing purposes.

Here is a few snapshots we have done together in the heat, and of course a lot other working happening, enjoy and have fun!

New Path of AKC School Development

Back in December 2015 with our Helpucation e.V. team from Germany, these are the business brainstorming that we did together. Too much and many things came up, then all are integrated in groups. Soon after the path has been blazed, some of the work have already been accomplished and some are in progress. Let’s have fun with us reading our workshop activities.
